Medical Coding: What The Experts Are Telling Us

By Justin Barnaby

Schools around the world are trying to help students learn ICD-10 coding and get their certification. Having your ICD-10 certification will help you to get a higher paying job and more reputability as well. You can learn how to do coding on the job or in a school setting. If you do it on the job, your certification will not be the same as if you had years of experiences, plus your certification. Your certification means a lot. In laymen terms, it means hat you know what you are doing when coding.

It is important to do your medical billing correctly. Once you begin to do your billing and coding correctly, good things begin to happen. People begin to say to themselves that they are moving along nicely and getting things done appropriately. You need to discover what the new codes are and how to get your billing right the first time out. If you don't get the codes right immediately, you will end up failing. You will have to wait 90 days to get your claim money. Sometimes, billers never get their reimbursement check.

Medical billing and coding today is scary for multiple reasons. For starters, there is no one way to do things anymore. Many coders today say that they are saddened by the fact that they are uninformed about all of the changes that are going on. Everything seemed to have happened so fast. However, there was plenty of time to study these new codes. However, most people didn't take the change seriously and waiting until October of 2015 to start their training. The new codes got released on October 1, 2015. It was too late to start training then. Now, you are going to have to get at least 6 months of training before you will be good enough to keep your job.

Insurance companies today expect you to know how to code appropately. If you submit a claim that seems right, but is actually wrong, the claim will not get paid on. It is a hard time to be a coder. The main reason is because coding has grown from being a small business into an extremely large one. You have to get familiar with over 100,000 codes. The codes are often hard to find. Coders are finding that when they meet with others in a classroom setting and speak to other experts, good things begin to happen. People begin to talk and chat about their knowledge in billing.

Physicians today are becoming dependent on their coders. This means that your salary is going to start going up. As salaries begin to increase, your demand begins to grow. If you happen to have 5 years of coding experience and an ICD-10 certification, you are in high demand and will probably have several job offers coming at you. However, if you have little experience and no ICD-10 certification, you will probably face a lot of rejections for work.
