How To Identify And Solve Construction Defects

By Olivia Cross

Throughout time, the standards in buildings have been raised in response to the growing need of ensuring safety and preventing failures that occur on structures. As a result of the growing concerns for safety, various measures have come up on how to minimize and avoid defects on buildings. Despite the improvements in engineering, architecture and design, there is still an increase in the rate of construction defects.

Identifying the proximate cause of a defect can be a daunting task which requires intensive investigative efforts from the professionals concerned with uncovering the truth in such difficult circumstances. The contractors hired to construct the building must try their best to ensure that these kinds of problems do not occur since they owe their clients duty of care.

After an arduous, long construction process, the last thing one would expect is to notice flaws in the building. Some of these defects are obvious and can easily be detected. Doors which do not open correctly and inexpert application of the exterior finishes can be identified with ease. Nonetheless, serious defects can be difficult to detect and can be really dangerous. More work must be done for these to be corrected.

There are various ways an individual can detect a serious defect when a building has been constructed. Looking for inadequate connections between the walkways and railings, and between decks and balconies is one of the ways for solving these problems. There are cases where decks have collapsed. Structures that are attached to the house should be securely fastened to ensure safety.

Other signs that the expert needs to look out for are the cracks found in basement concrete or those on foundation walls. While small cracking might not be serious, crack on foundations are indicative of settling or subsidence of soil. This is not good since they weaken the entire structure. In most cases, cracks on buildings indicate unsound structures. Therefore, one should be keen with such signs.

Windows and doors that do not work as expected indicate carpentry problems. Such problems must be looked into to avoid costly expenses. Other defects can be found at the basement of the building. Mold tend to thrive well in areas of wetness. However, it might be quite difficult for one to detect the presence of toxic mold. This is why it is advisable to hire professionals to carry out inspection. All leaking and broken pipes must be fixed to avoid such problems from taking place.

Dampness in corners and dark areas gets worse as time passes. When there is leakage on floor or wall surfaces, the home owner should hire professionals to fix such problems. Experts who are well experienced know what tools and techniques to use in such cases.

Of course home repairs lead to financial issues. In some cases, these burdens turn into lawsuits. The home builders of today use different methods when handling building flaws, and sometimes what they offer are simple Band-Aids that do not actually fix the problem as expected. Therefore, it is advisable to hire builders who are experienced and use modern equipment.
