By Andrea Davidson

Although mostly associated with grocery store items, private label products are expanding into new categories, such as private label cosmetics. A unique offering such as this is a great way to stand out from the competition. In addition, they offer benefits for both the seller and the customer, making them fairly easy to market.

Manufactures that make private label products sell them to other companies to be sold to consumers using their own name as the brand. Sometimes companies choose to use the store brand for their products, but they will often make up a name they feel will attract consumers. This concept has been around for some time, although most associate private label with cheaper grocery staples. While offering store brand groceries is a good way to attract sales from consumers looking to save costs, some of the newer categories seek to offer consumers an exclusive product.

Gaining share of the tightening consumer wallet is very important to most retail outlets. Private labeling is one way to do this as it offers a method to differentiate from the competition. Many new categories, including cosmetics, are showing up in stores and are becoming quite popular. Store branded cosmetics would be purchased from manufacturers and sold under the retailer's name, which gives consumers the sense that they are buying something they can't get anywhere else.

Many establishments could benefit from selling their own line of makeup, such as hair salons and other beauty related services, or even small boutiques. It is a great way to increase consumers' overall spend per visit and to gain repeat sales. Private label cosmetics offer benefits for both the seller and the customer.

Benefits for sellers include having the ability to increase sales per customer. For instance, a new color pallet could be suggested to someone getting their hair colored. Another example would be for small boutiques to add their own brand of makeup to their unique jewelry and accessory offering as a way to increase sales.

For the consumer, many would being willing to pay extra for the convenience of purchasing high quality makeup from a known establishment. Buying something exclusive is an attractive idea for most consumers, but most would be leery of what to buy or where to purchase. However, consumers who trust a certain establishment wouldn't think twice about trying a new product that carried the retailers name.

Those businesses already in the beauty industry, are fortunate to have a built in customer base. This makes marketing cosmetics a very simple task. Eye-catching displays are one of the simplest ways retailers can attract consumer attention and generate sales. Another way to introduce consumers to a new line of products is by offering a complimentary makeover with any service.

As both retailers and service providers seek ways to increase consumer spending, private label cosmetics may be just what they are looking for. Offering customers something they just can't purchase anywhere else is a great way to stand out from the competition. Customers will love the products as they appreciate the convenience and security of buying a product from an establishment they trust, and sellers will love the products as sales and repeat customers increase.
